  A really wonderfully realised collection of bucolic, antiquated indie-folk.

  "I’ve got no need for open roads / ‘Cause all I own fits on my back / I see the world from rusted trains / And always know I won’t be back." These lines, from the track Ghosts Towns, perhaps perfectly encapsulate this second LP from Florida native Ben Cooper, aka Radical Face. It’s a collection of lost-and-founds, sounds from artists already experienced given life anew by a singer whose M.O. is, simply, to inhabit these arrangements with a defined personality that presents the end products as wholly new discoveries.

  Smorgasbord albums can be trying listens, attempts to mesh a mishmash frequently resulting in missteps undermining what might’ve otherwise been a solid and satisfying collection. Ambition is to be encouraged, sure; but when acts think of themselves too highly, assuming that if they can nail rudimentary indie-rock riffs then a little electro aside segueing into some half-arsed mimicking of something avant-garde is fair game too, end products are rarely worth the polycarbonate plastic they’re presented on.

  Josh T Pearson – wild-eyed, heavy-bearded frontman of the phenomenal-for-an-album (2001’s The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads) Denton rockers Lift to Experience – was thought adrift in the wilderness during the early 00s. That double-disc, concept-rich long-player, a hugely acclaimed release, is all the trio concocted of note before they were done, Pearson seeking refuge amongst the detritus of a thousand other stalled and collapsed careers.

  This third album from the Canadian singer will chase away the winter chills.

  Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Mangan has an impressive CV – he’s toured with the likes of The Decemberists and Okkervil River; his second album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice, was nominated for the Polaris Prize; and he’s graced festival stages as prestigious as those found at Glastonbury and, stateside, Sasquatch. But this hard work, particularly domestically, is yet to translate into widespread recognition on these shores. Oh Fortune, arriving too late in the year to make the annual best-of lists, is unlikely to change that standing; but this is a delightful collection which could become a late-2011 favourite amongst fans of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and even Mumford & Sons.

• Iceage - New Brigade woensdag 23 november 2011

  Easily as good as any punk release you’ll hear in 2011.

  Expecting the genre of punk rock to do something wholly original in this, its fourth decade, would seem to be asking a lot. But if there’s a lesson we learn from Iceage’s New Brigade, it is that by doggedly ignoring trends and following one’s own path, it is still possible to happen on something that gleams like new. Four young men from suburban Copenhagen, Iceage draw from a deep pool of influences – familiar post-punk touchstones like Wire and Joy Division, the stirring tempos of hardcore and the shrill guitar dissonance of black metal, the snotty swagger of early-80s working class punk movement Oi! – but somehow bind it into something strangely fresh.

  Amerikaans echtpaar Aaron Coyes en Indra Dunis maken onder de naam Peaking Lights trippy lo-fi popmuziek met duidelijke dubinvloeden. Een ietwat bizarre mix die in de basis verrassend prima werkt. 936 is hun tweede album.

• Youth Lagoon - The Year of Hibernation maandag 07 november 2011

  Melancholic lo-fi magic from a young musician finding his way with touching results.

  In the summer of 2010 a young man from Seattle, Mike Hadreas, released a debut album under the Perfume Genius moniker which knocked this writer off his feet. Utterly naked of emotion, with lyrics set to aching swells of distorted lo-fi indie-cum-electronica, it was a striking collection that showcased not a talent with potential, but one that’d been forced to mature before its time. It was one of Huw Stephens’ top five albums of the year. It haunts the iPod to this day with no little regularity.

• Textures - Dualism maandag 31 oktober 2011

  Brabants metaltrots Textures bracht onlangs hun vierde album uit. Met de release van Dualism tourde de band zelfs de afgelopen twee maanden in Noord-Amerika en Canada. Het internationale succes is in ieder geval met de jaren steeds groter geworden. De vraag is echter hoe de stand van zaken muzikaal is, zeker na het vetrek van zanger Eric Kalsbeek en de komst van Daniël de Jongh (ex-CiLiCe).

  Nils Frahm is de ideale buurman. Een muzikant die het vervelend vindt als hij zijn buren diep in de nacht stoort. Om toch ’s nachts – met grote koptelefoon op het hoofd – zijn muze aan te kunnen boren, bedekte hij daarom de snaren van zijn vleugel met vilt.
