  Detroit-raised rapper Big Sean – a whopping 5’8", physically – has followed a path well travelled to this debut studio collection proper. Potential exhibited on previous mixtapes, encapsulated by the track Getcha Some, has been refined at the expense of some bite. This smoothing of aspects unpalatable to mainstream tastes is an action frequently taken in translating blog buzz into radio hits – and, taking Drake as an example, it can lead to significant successes. Sure, a few early adopters get dropped; but a few million fill, and swell, the spaces.

  The Alabama rapper’s star is sure to shine for the foreseeable based on this debut.

  With a catalogue stretching back to 2005’s self-released collection Creek Water, it’s perhaps surprising that Alabama-based rapper Yelawolf (born Michael Atha) has taken until now to reveal his debut album proper. (There have been mixtapes and EPs, but nothing more substantial.) But as its generally positive reception stateside illustrates, Radioactive has largely been worth the wait. With a plethora of guest vocalists crowding the credits, as well as a diverse array of production talents on board, it risks being a case of too many cooks – but the myriad styles just about gel together, enough to ensure that the central voice is worth focusing on throughout.

  While it was far from disappointing, the Beasties’ third LP, 1992’s Check Your Head, lacked a lot of the wow-factor that’d graced their sampladelic masterpiece of 1989, Paul’s Boutique. A return to the New York trio’s scrappy punk sound, prominent on early demos, Check Your Head was solid, competent, mixing the band’s trademark rhyme schemes with bombastic percussion and over-amplified riffs. But for their next set, messrs Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA would have to step their game up.

  Certain melodies don’t need words, rolling rhythms and lush crescendos filling the space where verbal expressions normally reside. It happens in rare moments, where lyrics would impede the flowing percussion and stifle its budding effervescence. When done properly, instrumental projects have the ability to soothe and sizzle, encouraging listeners to relax from the struggle and reflect upon calmer times. Amir Mohamed aka Oddisee’s Rock Creek Park is all of the above, serving as a flawless soundtrack for the historic Washington, D.C. park and a moving blueprint for other producers to follow. Quite the achievement for a project recorded over a two-week period in June.

  Spawning her first US number one single, Family Affair, for many fans No More Drama will always be their favourite Mary J. Blige album. Originally conceived as the second part of a trilogy following1999’s Mary, it reveals an artist in complete control. Singing every note (aside from collaborations with Eve, Pharrell, Common, Diddy and Ja Rule) and writing every word, while Blige has the obligatory cast-of-thousands so prevalent of RnB albums at the turn of the century, it feels like no-one else’s work but her own.

  Former 'folktronica' maverick branches out in style

  The latest project of erstwhile Tunng co-frontman Sam Genders, Diagrams offer a lavish, folk-tinged take on contemporary pop, full of deftly executed collisions between acoustic instruments and discreet laptop sound design – or ‘folktronica’ as it was once clumsily dubbed. It’s not, frankly, a million miles from Tunng, especially given how intrinsic Genders’ velvety Derbyshire brogue and songwriter’s craft, both very much the focus here, were to so many of his former band’s signature recordings.

  It’s an uncomfortably common practice in the cult of music critique for writers to overstate the importance of particular albums. Subsequently, long-players by relative makeweights like the Longpigs are talked about amongst scribes of a certain age as lost classics, and the consumer can pick up a deluxe edition of almost any album released prior to 2004, replete with unnecessary ‘bonus’ content that’ll never get played. So allow me to undersell the significance of DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing… LP, the Californian producer’s debut of 1996. It’s alright. It’s got merit. Its influence is definitely noticeable. It can be heard today and sound just as fresh as it did nearly 15 years ago. It did change the face of hip hop, sample culture, and has impressed its presence on next-to-every electronic artist to have dropped a break since its release. Sorry, I tried: like I said, such hyperbole is a mainstay of articles like this.
