  If you appreciate Lambchop’s mellow mordancy, you’ll like Nathaniel Rateliff, the 31-year-old from Bay, Missouri (population: 60) who has been living in Colorado since he was 19. Judging by the contents of his debut album, he’s hardly been whooping it up there: In Memory of Loss is a feast of wry introspection, the titles – Longing and Losing, Whimper and Wail, We Never Win – speaking volumes about the mood of droll self-regard.

  It is almost laughably easy to imagine that Light the Horizon will be the album which bestows high-rotation global ubiquity upon Bedouin Soundclash. If this occurs, it will be largely on the strength of lead track Elongo, a languid summoning of sun-dappled paradise with a ruthlessly anthemic chorus, a song which sounds custom-manufactured to soundtrack the closing credits of an overwrought romance, or a commercial for coconut-flavoured chocolate.

  It’s not just looks that can be deceiving; sounds can hoodwink, too. The debut album from Montreal-based four-piece BRAIDS is such a trompe l'oreille. First impressions are of delicate, hazy melodies brimming with purity; a childlike magic hovers amongst hypnotic loops and psychedelic sounds comparable to Gang Gang Dance or Animal Collective. But this ostensible innocence is not naivety, but rather of the butter-wouldn’t-melt variety.

  Syracuse art-poppers need to let their instincts do the thinking.

  Art-pop sorts are often accused of fumbling the ratio of intelligence to intuition, but this Syracuse outfit dodged such slap-downs on their 2008 debut album, The Rhumb Line, transcending their over-eagerness by buzzing like a baroque Vampire Weekend with a jones for the artier ends of 1980s British pop. On a more chamber-pop-styled second album, though, the balance proves trickier to sustain. Accomplished and impressive as it is, The Orchard equally often feels studied, its core parts fussed over at the expense of the lyrical and melodic shapes needed to energise them.

  Wie kent het nummer over zwarte paarden en een kersenboom niet? KT Tunstall heeft een knaller van een hit gemaakt in 2005. Tussen toen en nu heeft Katie vier albums gemaakt, waaronder de meest recente Tiger Suit. De plaat komt weliswaar uit oktober 2010, maar wegens het aankomende KT-optreden maakt FOK! een uitzondering. Worden wij verwend of geplaagd?

  Soms gaat een artiest voor altijd gebukt onder het succes van die ene grote hit. Veelal een toevalstreffer en niet direct representatief voor de rest van het repertoire. Sara Bareilles doet haar uiterste best niet tot die onfortuinlijke rij artiesten gerekend te worden.

• Raul Malo - Sinners & Saints donderdag 10 februari 2011

  He manages to make downer sentiments sound rather cheerful.

  On the opening title-track from this former Maverick's latest disc, it takes Malo two minutes before he opens his mouth to sing. It's a grand entrance, heralded by a rush of retro-kitsch Mariachi surf music, which just about sums up where the artist is at, nowadays. Lip-splitting trumpet, Farfisa-oid organ trots, and a skipping beat presage the high drama of Malo's entrance. The wind machine gently ruffles his hair and beard in front of a sunset Tijuana backdrop. A strategically-placed guitar solo hits, and the track closes with one last trumpet flourish. The song says it all, emphatically establishing the mood to follow.
  
  Next up, Malo might get more into rock'n'roll with Living for Today, but the twangin' guitar remains the same, alongside some honky tonk/barrelhouse piano, spirited acoustic strumming and a backing vocal chorus, all emerging from a successfully swampy mix. The songs are full of involved percussion patterns, with gourd-scraping, maraca-rattling and syncopated handclaps a-go-go. Malo can veer towards sheer pop, but his jaunty delivery often conceals darker subject matter. He manages to make downer sentiments sound rather cheerful.
  
  The album was recorded in Malo's home studio, but it still boasts a big-production sound a full decade on from the release of his solo debut. Malo states that this is his most personal and intimate project so far, and he's probably correct in that assessment. His current approach mixes rock'n'pop with Tex-Mex and Mex-Mex, but there's not much trace of the country music that was formerly a chief concern. Roy Orbison seizes the controls for the fourth song. As this Rodney Crowell ballad is titled 'Til I Gain Control Again, it seems that Malo is well aware of this recurring stylistic possession. Michael Guerra's accordion feature on Superstar has the feel of a Mexican-zydeco half-breed. Sombras is sung in Spanish: the twang is still mighty, the strings are tearful and Malo is busy carving out the new genre of sincere south-of-the-border melodrama. It's all delivered within a classic 40 minute album length. The perfect pop punch.

  The churning beige waters of the folk-based female singer-songwriter are deep and lucrative indeed, but tough to distinguish oneself amidst. A kooky edge and vocal inventiveness has helped Regina Spektor gain distinctive colour, Shania Twain made billions by delving sporadically into country pop and Tori Amos has done surprisingly well out of playing the pig-suckling nutjob.

  Vanuit het niets duiken ze op. Op de radio wordt je er zo ongeveer mee doodgegooid. En de tracks blijven maar in je hoofd circuleren. Ja, ik heb het over de Britse band Hurts. De band bestaat uit twee heren. Theo Hutchcraft neemt de vocalen voor zijn rekening en de synths worden bespeeld onder de verantwoording van Adam Anderson.

  Young Cleveland artist reveals a debut moulded in the power-pop tradition.

  The solo project of 18-year-old Cleveland resident Dylan Baldi, Cloud Nothings fairly rained down on 2010 with a series of super-tight EPs in the best power-pop tradition. That material was gathered for a compilation LP, Turning On, released in October, but this is the debut proper, shifting focus from the teenage songwriter’s parental home to a studio in Baltimore, with Dan Deacon and Future Islands producer Chester Gwazda on board.

  In 2010 stond Joel Thomas Zimmerman op plek 4 van de beste DJ's ter wereld. Zimmerman is beter bekend met een een grote muizenkop op zijn hoofd en onder de naam deadmau5. Maar eigenlijk vindt hij de beschrijving DJ niet passen bij zijn stiel en ook met een genre wil hij niet geoormerkt worden. Artiest of producer is een titel die hem beter afgaat.
