  • Air - Le Voyage Dans La Lune dinsdag 06 maart 2012

  • Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo zaterdag 11 februari 2012

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

  • Enter Shikari - A Flash Flood Of Colour dinsdag 07 februari 2012

"We’re sick of this shit", scandeert Roughton Reynolds op een van de nummers op het nieuwe album van Enter Shikari. De band is boos over de staat van de wereld en dat vertaalt zich in elf wervelende liedjes.

  • Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo vrijdag 13 januari 2012

A suffocating soundtrack, but one that suits its movie’s air of oppression.

It’s been said elsewhere in the press that the second soundtrack from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to accompany a David Fincher film is rather less impressive than the pair’s multi-award-winning score for The Social Network. But such critique stemmed not from hearing this three-disc, 173-minute offering exclusive of its parent picture; instead from experiencing it as last year’s American version of the 2009 Swedish hit – itself an adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel, published posthumously in 2005 – rolled at the cinema. What these arrangements might subjectively lack when matched to on-screen action is rendered moot as its electronic throbs, washes of eerie noise and ghostly drones take hold. At such a length it’s nearly impossible to remain focused on throughout; instead, it paints whatever else distracts the attentions several shades of grey.

  • Doktor Schnitt - Katerushki dinsdag 27 december 2011

  • Sepalcure - Sepalcure vrijdag 02 december 2011

A frequently fantastic, weighty, clever and emotionally involving LP from the NYC duo.

Over the last 18 months or so, the absorption of outside influences into dubstep’s template has reached critical mass. Gradual assimilation of house, techno, 2-step and Chicago juke has collapsed boundaries, resulting in the array of 'bass music' forms currently hogging dancefloors. Machinedrum and Praveen Sharma's collaborative project Sepalcure has been one of the more interesting results. Their earlier EPs melded samples and textures more readily associated with 'classic' house music with dubstep's weight and mood. Their debut full-length continues the same trend, but ups the ante, putting a host of other elements into play. The most obvious throughout is juke/footwork, whose stammering rhythms and rapid-fire tempos also acted as the basis for Machinedrum's solo album Room(s), released earlier this year.

  • Birdy - Birdy vrijdag 25 november 2011

The band ignites on several occasions across this double-disc live set.

Releasing a Greatest Hits album doesn’t seem very Sigur Rós, so this live album will have to do. Since the Icelanders haven’t released a new album since 2008 (and the follow-up to Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust was scrapped before it was finished), Inni is also a welcome stopgap, if not the album fans wanted. Inni (‘Inside’) contains tracks from each of their albums, and comes with 75 minutes of concert footage (no frills; no audience even) from London’s Alexandra Palace in November 2008. The double-CD from the same two shows encompasses 105 minutes, enough for about five of their songs. Only kidding. There are 15 tracks in total, but Sigur Rós songs are the aural equivalent of the slow food club, each taste to be savoured and endured so that every classical, folk, ambient, rock and post-rock flavour can be absorbed. If rock’n’roll is the new food, Jónsi and company could win Masterchef every time.

  • Birdy - Birdy vrijdag 04 november 2011

A clever covers set from the 15-year-old singer, which points to a great future.

The word "haunting" is common as gossip in pop criticism – wont to tag everything from Phil Collins' chocolate flogger In the Air Tonight to the Eminem murder ballad that references it, Stan. But there's really no other word to describe the record that gave Birdy wings. Released back in January, her voice-and-piano cover of Bon Iver's Skinny Love, as economical as it is evocative, became a Radio 1 favourite and unexpected top 20 hit.

  • Joe Jonas - Fastlife woensdag 19 oktober 2011

  • Unheilig - Grosse Freiheit vrijdag 23 september 2011

  • Penguin Prison - Penguin Prison vrijdag 09 september 2011

An entertaining showcase of the New York producer/remixer’s talents.

From Altern-8 to SBTRKT, it is unclear why so many purveyors of electronica are attracted to masks and enigmatic aliases. Perhaps it’s a hangover from the days when being able to play ‘real’ instruments was a mark of pride, whereas playing synths was somehow shameful. New Yorker Chris Glover is another man of mystery, answering to the rather cruel moniker of Penguin Prison and rather reluctant to give interviews or have photos taken (not that they don't exist).

  • Duran Duran - All You Need Is Now maandag 15 augustus 2011

  • The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole vrijdag 05 augustus 2011

Staggering electronic psychedelia, fit for the stadiums

If their debut, 1995’s Exit Planet Dust, set the Chemical Brothers stall out as purveyors of large beats and chunkin’ funk, then Dig Your Own Hole shot them right into the stratosphere. With its number one singles, Grammy award and multi-platinum status, Dig Your Own Hole took Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons from the backrooms to the stadiums.

  • Tricky - Maxinquaye vrijdag 22 juli 2011

Tricky’s debut album is an intoxicating listen possessed by a rare, wicked beauty.

Bristol rapper Adrian Thaws, aka Tricky (once he’d dropped the cumbersome "Kid" from his moniker), was hardly an unknown force when he released this debut album in early 1995. His whispered, husky vocals had appeared on Massive Attack’s 1991 disc Blue Lines, and he featured again on the trio’s next LP, 94’s Protection. Maxinquaye, though, was something else. It’s hard to imagine how he could have stepped out of Massive Attack’s shadow in a more dramatic fashion.

  • LMFAO - Sorry for Party Rocking woensdag 20 juli 2011

Blinkered beats and dunderheaded lyricism – but compellingly committed nonetheless.

You don’t need to be a playground nipper to know what the LMFAO acronym typically stands for. But in this instance it also means "Loving My Friends and Others" – that’s what the video to the Los Angeles duo’s track Champagne Showers states (for pre-watershed audiences). The pair’s rise to prominence has been a while coming, given they’ve been active since 2006 (and this is their second album), but hardly a surprise when their connections are considered. Stefan Gordy, aka Redfoo, is the son of Motown founder Berry Gordy, while his partner Skyler Gordy, aka SkyBlu, is Berry’s grandson. The duo are uncle and nephew, then, but their musical output isn’t always wholesome fun for all the family.

  • Frankovic - Frankovic woensdag 20 juli 2011

  • Serengeti - Family & Friends vrijdag 15 juli 2011

  • DJ Shadow - Endtroducing… donderdag 14 juli 2011

An unprecedented debut which changed the face of hip hop in the 90s.

It’s an uncomfortably common practice in the cult of music critique for writers to overstate the importance of particular albums. Subsequently, long-players by relative makeweights like the Longpigs are talked about amongst scribes of a certain age as lost classics, and the consumer can pick up a deluxe edition of almost any album released prior to 2004, replete with unnecessary ‘bonus’ content that’ll never get played. So allow me to undersell the significance of DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing… LP, the Californian producer’s debut of 1996. It’s alright. It’s got merit. Its influence is definitely noticeable. It can be heard today and sound just as fresh as it did nearly 15 years ago. It did change the face of hip hop, sample culture, and has impressed its presence on next-to-every electronic artist to have dropped a break since its release. Sorry, I tried: like I said, such hyperbole is a mainstay of articles like this.
