  • Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (II) maandag 28 februari 2011

  • Hurts - Happiness donderdag 27 januari 2011

  • Tu Fawning - Hearts On Hold maandag 10 januari 2011

  • Robyn - Body Talk maandag 22 november 2010

Robyn - Body Talk"Even the Vatican knows not to fuck with me," chirps Robyn on her third release of 2010. The Swedish diva's swagger is earned. This disc cherry-picks from two previous EPs while tossing in five new tracks. It all adds up to the best dance-pop album of 2010, 15 songs that are both immaculately catchy and packed with quirks: On "Fembot," she does a hilarious sexy-robot bit, bragging about her "automatic booty applications"; later, she trades over-the-top boasts with Snoop Dogg and turns in the kind of Day-Glo dancehall track M.I.A. used to rock. Even her Eurocheese ballads are passionately weird: On "Time Machine," she folds a reference ("All I want is a DeLorean") into a huge, heartfelt chorus Lady Gaga would kill to have written.

  • Robyn - Body Talk dinsdag 16 november 2010

Robyn - Body TalkThe first genuinely exciting, no-filler, pure pop full-length album since The Fame.

First, the consumer information. Diehard fans of the Swedish synth-pop veteran who have been waiting for the third part in a 2010 Body Talk trilogy may be disappointed. Body Talk contains five new tracks plus five songs from each of the previously released parts one and two; of those five new tracks, two are different versions of previously released cuts. So the third part of the trilogy is, in fact, a three-track single. You can download the five newbies as Body Talk Part 3; but then, you can download any five tracks from any album, in theory. Ms Carlsson’s frothy press release quote about breaking "a world record in how many songs I could release in a year" happily ignores the fact that the running time of all three Body Talks barely adds up to a double-album.

  • The Script - Science & Faith dinsdag 02 november 2010

The Script - Science & FaithIn 2008 bestormde een toen nog onbekend bandje uit Ierland de hitlijsten met nummers als 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved', 'Breakeven' en 'We Cry'. Na het gelijknamige debuutalbum is The Script nu terug met een nieuwe plaat: Science and Faith.

  • Sharon Van Etten - Epic vrijdag 29 oktober 2010

Sharon Van Etten - EpicMelds pedal steel and electronica into something really rather gorgeous.

Sharon Van Etten's own description of her songs as "sad prairie folk music" is in part accurate; certainly the seven tracks that make up her latest offering, Epic, own all the wide-skied wistfulness of the American folk tradition. But such statements do little justice to Van Etten's ear for near-pop catchiness – single One Day, for example, runs at a pleasingly radio-friendly lollop, spurred on a little by shades of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

  • The Walkmen - Lisbon vrijdag 08 oktober 2010

The Walkmen - LisbonA collation and culmination of their finest work in years.

Let’s play a little word association. "The Walkmen"… "The Rat". It’s an immediate response. A reflex. A justifiably clichéd answer eternally associated with the band despite the fact they’re now six albums and a decade in. It’s still, undeniably, the hallmark, and often the brooding benchmark, The Walkmen are held against.

So, the resonant post-punk power of The Rat might will always hold a sentimental sway – from the black and white claustrophobia of the video to Hamilton Leithauser’s embittered voice, seething and beseeching some unknown soul – but The Walkmen have been steadfast in their move from the dark, driven post-punk of the Bows + Arrows era.

  • The Walkmen - Lisbon maandag 13 september 2010

The Walkmen - LisbonDespite their roots on the scrappy New York post-punk-revival scene of the early 2000s, the Walkmen's sweeping visions often imply wide-open spaces, or at least the skyscraper diaspora as the Grand Canyon. On 's opening track, "Juveniles," singer Hamilton Leithauser proclaims, "The country air is good for me," over a loping drum bash and elegiac bluesy-U2 guitar. "Angela Surf City" and "Woe Is Me" are similarly expansive rockers, and there's a touch of down-home Rod Stewart in Leithauser's grungy crooning. Yet sometimes the Walkmen's anthemic naturalism wanders without much direction ("While I Shovel the Snow" is about as much fun as, well, shoveling snow), and their echo-laden illuminations are at times all sky and no solid ground.

  • Hurts - Happiness maandag 06 september 2010

Hurts - HappinessNo opportunity is spared to slip in a choir or a chorus that demands a flame thrower.

There’s the monochrome cover shot, the duo wearing suits and haughty scowls; above it, a one-word title that seems arch, even ironic, in this context; and then, there’s the presence of Kylie Minogue. Tonight, Matthew, are Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson the Pet Shop Boys, actually?

  • Robyn - Body Talk Pt 2 maandag 06 september 2010

Robyn - Body Talk Pt 2She's as feisty as Pink, as beat-savvy as M.I.A., does Eurodisco better than Gaga. But can this mercurial diva, a star in her native Sweden, crack the Top 40?  The second EP in Robyn's trilogy ( was in June) offers up another batch of great, club-ready songs that are a touch too weird for American hit radio. Robyn sings and raps about standard diva themes (dance-floor ecstasy, self-reliance), but the music is deliciously wacked-out. In "U Should Know Better," she boasts alongside Snoop Dogg as a churchy choir swells over fuzzy effects. "We Dance to the Beat" is a thumper that slides from Eighties electro into squiggly abstraction. As far as the radio goes, Robyn has other priorities. "We dance to the beat," she croons, "of silent mutation."

  • Women - Public Strain vrijdag 27 augustus 2010

Women - Public StrainIt might take time to grasp, but this is one of 2010’s finest LPs.

Artful Canadian quartet Women’s self-titled 2008 debut showed much promise, but for many ears was probably a little too heavy-handed in its marriage of melody and abrasion. It bristled with nervous energy; a touch overzealous in its use of noise, distortion and fuzz, and often shy of delivering a chorus.

  • Katy Perry - Teenage Dream maandag 23 augustus 2010

Katy Perry - Teenage DreamDisplays intelligence, individuality and character – but too often morphs into parody.

Love or hate Katy Perry, she knows how to play the game. Coquettish expressions, polarising wardrobe choices and salacious quotes about her high-profile relationship certainly haven’t harmed her status. But vitally, there’s a cut-off point, leaving the music to do the rest. Exhibit A: Perry’s second major-label album Teenage Dream, which employs her knack of turning heads before following through with the substance.

  • Wavves - King of the Beach maandag 02 augustus 2010

Wavves - King of the BeachSan Diego scuzz-rocker overcomes his demons in mesmerising style.

Nathan Williams has never been one for welcoming listeners into his world with open arms. In fact he’s made things decidedly difficult since the first few Wavves tracks spread like wildfire around the web in 2008. Two hastily thrown together records followed (confusingly titled Wavves and Wavvves, recorded on his laptop and made up of reverb-heavy, rackety sprawl). Then, even worse: the singer very publicly teetered precariously on the brink of self-destruction. Depression, substance abuse and alcoholism ultimately marred his music-making and resulted in an onstage meltdown at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival last year.

  • Wavves - King of the Beach maandag 02 augustus 2010

Wavves - King of the BeachIt's telling that Nathan Williams, a.k.a. Wavves, is a poor speller. His hazy California pop punk is all about skipping school and riding your bong to the ocean. On the third Wavves full-length, a one-man bedroom experiment blossoms into a real band, with Jay Reatard's feisty backing duo and Modest Mouse's producer beefing up low-fi strumming, smiling melodies and zonked studio whimsy. Songs like "Post Acid" mix slashing riffs and joyful hooks, while "Mickey Mouse" builds an echo cathedral atop what sounds like a loop of the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron." He didn't strain any brain cells on the lyrics, but Williams' "convertible cocoon" is an escape pod, not a think tank.

  • The Morning Benders - Big Echo dinsdag 27 juli 2010

  • M.I.A. - Maya maandag 19 juli 2010

  • Robyn - Body Talk Pt 1 maandag 19 juli 2010

Robyn - Body Talk Pt 1"Don't fuckin' tell me what to do," chants reformed teen-pop prodigy Robyn. No worry, girl, things are under control. With help from Klas Åhlund – who co-wrote her 2005 cred-maker, – the singer drops a near-perfect mini-album, launching a planned trilogy. Beats from Diplo and Röyksopp drive high-heeled heartbreak and oh-snap comedy. "Once you've gone tech, you never ever goin' back," she declares on "Fembot," out-bionic-ing Xtina by 20 gigabytes. Capped with a Swedish folk gem, shows a dancehall queen with more than just blonde ambition.

  • Scissor Sisters - Night Work maandag 12 juli 2010
