  Captivating grooves abound on the west coast duo’s first UK LP.

  Smorgasbord albums can be trying listens, attempts to mesh a mishmash frequently resulting in missteps undermining what might’ve otherwise been a solid and satisfying collection. Ambition is to be encouraged, sure; but when acts think of themselves too highly, assuming that if they can nail rudimentary indie-rock riffs then a little electro aside segueing into some half-arsed mimicking of something avant-garde is fair game too, end products are rarely worth the polycarbonate plastic they’re presented on.

  Amerikaans echtpaar Aaron Coyes en Indra Dunis maken onder de naam Peaking Lights trippy lo-fi popmuziek met duidelijke dubinvloeden. Een ietwat bizarre mix die in de basis verrassend prima werkt. 936 is hun tweede album.

  If you affiliate yourself in any way with punk, grunge, alternative or avant-rock and haven’t yet familiarised yourself with at least a handful of Sonic Youth recordings then there’s something sorely wrong. They’ve shared stages and labels with your favourite bands be they Swans, Black Flag, Nirvana or Merzbow and influenced more nerdy teenagers to experiment with alternate tunings and feedback than you could possibly shake a stick at. Without them we most likely wouldn’t have ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Mogwai or The Men and a whole generation would be fuddling around in the dirt wondering where to take rock music next.

  Het moge duidelijk zijn: Spinvis is onze medicijnman, onze leraar, onze priester. “Goede poëzie moet op het randje van betekenisloos zijn en dan toch heel veel betekenis hebben.” Met zijn Nederlandstalige poëzieliedjes maakt Spinvis, echte naam Erik de Jong, gebroken harten weer heel.

  Spinvis zet zichzelf in 2002 in de kijker, wanneer hij zijn lo-fi debuutalbum uitbrengt. Smalfilm en Bagagedrager worden bescheiden hitjes bij het grote publiek, en verkrijgen een cultstatus onder de fans. Het was even wachten, maar na een Zilveren Harp, Annie M.G. Schmidt-prijs en Noorderslag Popprijs, twee albums, en een theatershow door heel Nederland, presenteert Spinvis nu ‘Tot ziens, Justine Keller’ op de planken van Paard van Troje. "Na het bewandelen van vele zijpaden, is de tafel weer gedekt met luisterrijke schotels, wonderlijke hapjes, gevaarlijke wijnen en spul waar je raar van gaat dromen."

  A second LP from the Irish singer which feels unforced, spontaneous and timeless.

  County Meath’s Lisa Hannigan once harboured theatrical ambitions but first came to public attention not as a thespian but as the counterpoint voice (and occasional lead) in Damien Rice’s band. Quitting that successful, but for a fledgling songwriter, increasingly frustrating franchise in 2007, Hannigan’s hastily recorded solo debut of 2008, See Sew, gained her a Mercury Music Prize nomination and platinum sales. With the release of Passenger, Hannigan, now 30, seems to be drawing a line under all that, or at least signalling the end of a lengthy apprenticeship and the arrival of a mature singer-songwriter possessed of an idiosyncratic yet thoroughly accessible gift.

  An unexpectedly great sixth LP from former fun-time punks turned introspective souls.

  When a band announces an indefinite hiatus, as baggy-shorted pop-punk funsters Blink-182 did in 2005 after five LPs and a few circumventions of the globe, they usually never return. (Yes, we’re looking at you, Fugazi, and still waiting.) And when tragedy strikes that band, those chances of a comeback become slimmer still. In 2008, Blink drummer Travis Barker, at the time a member of +44 alongside fellow 182-er Mark Hoppus, was in an air crash, and only just survived. His accident happened less than a month after regular Blink-182 producer Jerry Finn died of a brain haemorrhage. That sixth album was looking ever more distant.

  Black Lips is een humoristische garage punk band uit Atlanta. In Amerika hebben ze hun faam inmiddels verkregen en dan wel om controversiële shows waarbij kapotte instrumenten, crowdsurfing, toiletrollen, spuug en kots geen uitzonderingen zijn. Als dat al niet de moeite waard is, ze maken -naast de tegenzin om volwassen te worden- ook nog eens hele vrolijke door de jaren '60 geïnspireerde garage rock. Zet The Ramones, The Beatles en Rocket from the Crypte bij elkaar en je hebt de flower punk van de Black Lips. Arabia Mountain is het door Mark Ronson (o.a. bekend als producer van de albums van Amy Winehouse en Kaiser Chiefs) geproduceerde nieuwe album van de band. Check de nieuwe video Family Tree voor een voorproefje van de fenomenale muziek die ze tijdens State-X New Forms ten gehore gaan brengen.

  Indie band’s comeback LP is a fine document of like-it-is affairs.

  Fronted by UK-based Brazilian singer Isabel Monteiro, Drugstore emerged in 1993. But their slow, yearning songs were at odds with the primary colours of Britpop. In fact, they never really fitted into any particular category and, despite high profile fans like Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley and a top 40 album, they drifted towards the margins until announcing a hiatus in 2002.

  Hard work, but this is an album which reveals rewards.

  This album is hard work. Night of Hunters is billed as a "21st century song cycle inspired by select classical pieces spanning the last 400 years". "The protagonist", as Tori Amos describes the character she plays here, is "a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship". During the course of a single eventful night, she experiences "an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself" – apparently "allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter".
