  Vier dagen voor de aanslagen op het World Trade Center in New York nam de toen nog redelijk onbekende Ryan Adams zijn video van de single 'New York, New York' op. Gewapend met een gitaar voert hij het nummer op voor de skyline van de metropool, een skyline die een halve week later dramatisch zou veranderen. Het nummer werd uiteindelijk Adams zijn doorbraak bij het grote publiek. Een maand terug werden de aanslagen voor het tiende jaar op rij herdacht en gingen we via allerlei media even terug in de tijd.

  Indie band’s comeback LP is a fine document of like-it-is affairs.

  Fronted by UK-based Brazilian singer Isabel Monteiro, Drugstore emerged in 1993. But their slow, yearning songs were at odds with the primary colours of Britpop. In fact, they never really fitted into any particular category and, despite high profile fans like Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley and a top 40 album, they drifted towards the margins until announcing a hiatus in 2002.

  On album six, Mitchell achieved a sky-high marriage of serenity and yearning.

  Released in January 1974, Joni Mitchell’s sixth album was her bridge of sighs between folk-rock singer-songwriter and neo-jazz experimentalist. After the successes of Blue and For the Roses, she spent most of 73 crafting it; yet for all the exquisite musicality of her band (guests included Crosby, Nash, Robbie Robertson and José Feliciano) it’s confessional and spontaneous-sounding. The pure but sensuous voice, the acuity and wit of her lyrics and the guileful arrangements mean that its candour endures. Despite the current female domination of the album charts, there isn’t a 21st century artist to hold a candle to her genius.

  What could have been an epilogue is actually an entirely new chapter.

  Album three from New York’s O’Death finds the rough-edged folk-punk quintet, all shiny eyes and bushy beards behind music that rings out with old-time values and contemporary bite, returning from the brink of potential dissolution. The band’s drummer, David Rogers-Berry, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2009, around touring in support of second LP Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin. But while the bone cancer could have sidelined the sticksman for good, several months of chemotherapy and a shoulder replacement have seen him through. And Outside is a celebration of his recovery – a great album on its own terms, and truly remarkable given how close it presumably came to never being made.

  Whatever maudlin magic musician Justin Vernon found in the remoteness of rural Wisconsin come the close of 2006 and the dawn of 2007 – made devastatingly real on his debut LP as Bon Iver, For Emma, Forever Ago – it’s something that many another artist has been trying to conjure since. Dispatch a band into isolation today, to cajole those creative juices, and inevitably some plucky press type will label them as "doing a Bon Iver". The album’s impact on today’s indie-folk scene, and beyond, was powerful, and global commercial success was the unlikely culmination of Vernon’s catharsis following the break-up of both his previous band and a relationship.
