R.E.M. - Green (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

Het is dit jaar alweer een kwart eeuw geleden dat het baanbrekende album Green van R.E.M. verscheen. Green was de zesde studioplaat en was het debuut voor de band bij het grote label Warner Bros. De plaat zorgde destijds voor de internationale doorbraak van de band en werd in totaal meer dan 4 miljoen keer verkocht. De band, bestaande uit Michael Stipe (zang), Peter Buck (gitaar, mandoline), Mike Mills (basgitaar, keyboards, accordeon) en Bill Berry (drums), waren na het verschijnen van Document in 1987 labelloos, tot ze het daaropvolgende jaar een contract van 10 miljoen dollar van Warner Bros kregen aangeboden voor de komende vijf album. Daar hadden de mannen uiteraard wel oren naar.

The title of Demi Lovato's fourth LP promises a "personal" album, and Lovato gets songwriting credits on nine songs. But make no mistake: This is industrial-strength pop, and all the better for it. The songwriters include hitmaking heavyweights like Ryan Tedder and Rami Yacoub; the choruses boom; the production has a high-gloss sheen. It's predictable stuff – sassy songs, lovelorn songs, a couple of pop-psych pep talks – but Lovato is good company, and her voice has gustiness and character. Catchiest tune: the single "Heart Attack." Gratuitous patriotic anthem: "Made in the USA." Lyric most likely to confuse the kids: "You try to take me home like you're DiMaggio."

After detours including a Grammy-winning gospel LP and a key role in boyfriend Robert Plant's Band of Joy project, Griffin is back to her day job: singing her own artful country-folk songs. Except here, with a voice evidently stretched by her side projects, she expands the notion of country. Her unusual harmonies with Plant on "Highway Song" and the hypnotic "Ohio" match anything from his celebrated Raising Sand LP. And when Griffin turns the unlikely line "God is a wild old dog/Someone left out on the highway" into a profound meditation on spirituality, all smeared vowels and sparkling guitars, it's clear her writing remains as surprising as it is masterful.

In an era when "radio-friendly" was the coin of the Top 40-dominated realm, Sports was a veritable radio reach-around, spawning five Top 20 singles. (This reissue adds a disc of "Hell-o Cleveland!" live versions.) Lewis, a recovering folk rocker, filed Fifties corn ("The Heart of Rock & Roll"), red-sport-coat country ("Honky Tonk Blues"), warmed-over New Wave ("You Crack Me Up") and Cali soft rock ("If This Is It") into his own cheese Everest. This being the Eighties, Sports also had a bitingly realist song about the emotional wreckage of the Vietnam War ("Walking on a Thin Line"). What a time to be alive – and stuck in traffic.

Garage music – the recently revived sound of late-Nineties London via early-Nineties New York and New Jersey – is starting to bother the dance mainstream, from Skrillex dropping a surprise "future garage" set on the Holy Ship! EDM cruise to young Londoners Disclosure slaying Ultra Music Festival. (Garage's bright syncopation is perfect if you're up on Molly.) This sizzling overview of mostly U.K. producers blends fetching new tracks (Rhythm Operator's sultry "Anytime") with a clutch of last year's biggest club hits (the NY Stomp remix of George Fitzgerald's "Child," Dusky's "Flo Jam"). Older clubbers will find it familiar, but it moves too briskly to feel retro.

Toen in 1981 Evil Dead in de bioscopen verscheen was dat een mijlpaal in de geschiedenis van het horrorgenre. De film zorgde voor de internationale doorbraak van Sam Raimi en kreeg daarna een enorme cultstatus. Daar kon zelfs de zure preutse ouwe toverkol Mary Whitehouse niks aan veranderen met haar National Viewers' and Listeners' Association en de verbanning van Evil Dead uit de Britse videotheken. Uiteindelijk wisten de liefhebbers destijds ook zonder internet wel aan de juiste films te komen. Evil Dead vertelt het verhaal van een groepje jongeren, die in de bossen van Michigan een afgelegen hut ontdekken, waar ze een oud boek en een bandrecorder vinden. Als ze vervolgens de band afspelen, ontwaken ze onwetend een stel eeuwenoude demonen en breekt de hel los.

This is the sound of despair, according to singer Matt Berninger of the National: "If you want to make me cry," he claims early on this record, in "Don't Swallow the Cap," "play Let It Be or Nevermind." It is a surprising admission, given the Brooklyn band's established anguish on albums like 2007's Boxer and the 2010 bestseller, High Violet: a chaos of broken affections and mortal fears drawn with spare rhythmic and melodic flourishes, often in wide, open reverb. On much of Trouble Will Find Me as well, the terse phrases and single-tone exclamations of guitarists Bryce and Aaron Dessner hang around Berninger's baritone gravity like clouded starlight.

Don't be thrown by the name: The music Montreal duo Majical Cloudz makes is cold, stark and confrontationally intimate. Over a backdrop of loops and electronic drones patient to the point of static, Devon Welsh bellows lyrics so naked they're embarrassing to hear, let alone repeat. His bravery lies in the fact that he doesn't mince words. His talent lies in the fact that so many of his words are universal, however dramatic. "If life could forever be one instant," he sings on "Bugs Don't Buzz," "Would it be the moment you met me?" Song after song, this is Welsh's goal: Strip the world down to two people and try to stop time.

Harper Simon - Division Street

De naam Harper Simon zal niet veel muziekliefhebbers wat zeggen, ondanks zijn goed ontvangen self-titled debuut in 2010. Als je dan zegt dat het de zoon uit Paul Simon zijn eerste huwelijk is, is het lijntje naar faam en bekendheid wat korter. Harper Simon probeert zijn roots echter niet al teveel te gebruiken om door te breken in de muzikale wereld en gaat qua muziek ook zijn eigen gang. Drie jaar na zijn debuutplaat is er nu Division Street, een album dat in elk geval over het algemeen meer volume heeft dan de platen van zijn pa.

Voor het debuutalbum van Dangers Of The Sea vormde zanger Andreas Bay Estrup een band uit de Crème de la Crème van de Deense muziekwereld. Het resultaat is een duister maar ook zeker zeer melancholiek album, simpelweg getiteld Dangers Of The Sea.

De combinaties van wolf of wolven in een bandnaam zijn populair, zo waren daar onder andere het Nederlandse Wolfendale, Wolf People, Wolf Parade en van een aantal jaren terug ook nog Wolfmother. Naast een schijnbare interesse in de species Lupus, brachten al deze artiesten ook nog eens erg lekkere platen uit. Aan het rijtje wolvennamen kunnen we er weer eentje toevoegen: House of Wolves. Qua naam klopt het, maar is ook dit weer een fijne plaat?

Illusionless - Rulers of the Sane

Illusionless is een progressieve deathmetalband uit Leiden die in 2011 werd opgericht. Samen met Uri Dijk, de toetsenist van de uit Etten-Leur afkomstige progmetalband Textures, gingen de mannen van Illusionless naar de O-Town Studio in Oegstgeest, om daar een viertal nummers op te nemen. Bart Hennephof (de gitarist van Textures) nam vervolgens het snarenwerk van deze opnames nog eens onder handen in de Final Focus Studios, waarna de eindopnames ook nog eens werden gemastered door niemand minder dan Acle Kahnney, de gitarist en oprichter van de Britse progmetalband Tesseract. Het resultaat is een heerlijk stuk melomanisch geweld, met als titel Rulers of the Sane.
